Graduate Institute of Studies in Documentary & Film Archiving
:::
The Graduate Institute  of Studies in Documentary and Film Archiving was formerly the Graduate Institute of  Studies in Documentary. It is Taiwan’s  first and only academic institution offering documentary makers training within  a Master’s  program. Since its establishment in 1996, not only did the Institution incubate an impressive number of documentary filmmakers for Taiwan, but also helped to preserve important records and images on the changes of Taiwan’s society over the years, from democratization to changes of the ruling party, from the height of economic growth to the relocation of industries abroad, and from the September
21st Earthquake to the August 8th Floods. It also educates and promotes the concept of documentaries as a form of media in the consciousness of the public.

However, in recent years, through developments such as the increasing convenience of recording tools, the enriching of image and publication contents, and the growing popularity of documentary showcases, Taiwan has become a society oversaturated with images. In our daily lives, we see an abundance of recorded images both watched and being watched. Yet, the recreation of crowds and popularity does not necessarily represent an increased diversity of perspectives. An age characterized by each one carrying his/her recording tools does not necessarily herald the implementation of a civil society. As an academic institution offering a Master’s program, the Graduate Institute of Studies in Documentary needs to rethink the theory and methodology of the documentary as a discipline.

Therefore, starting in 2010, the Institute changed its name from Graduate Institute of Studies in Documentary to Graduate Institute of Studies in Documentary and Film Archiving, as well as setting up the Documentary Division and the Film Archiving Division, conferring the Master of Fine Arts Degree and Master of Arts Degree, respectively. The former inherits the existing training and places a heavier emphasis on the pioneering of the documentary into new fields, especially models of diversity and their implementation; the latter continues to highlight and develop the characteristics of the course on film archiving and preservation, thereby strengthening the role of documentary as an audio and visual file offering historical perspectives.
